Psychological first aid

Psychological first aid is a support activity that helps people affected by an emergency, disaster or traumatic event. It aims to reduce initial distress, meet current needs, promote flexible coping and encourage adjustment. It is different to Mental Health First Aid.

The Australian Red Cross has developed a Psychological First Aid Guide for people working in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

The Guide explains what Psychological First Aid is and isn’t and its basic principles and applications.
