Trains come anytime,
day or night, including
when we least expect them.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through...Expect the Unexpected. Watch out for Trains. Railway tracks are no place for walking, riding bikes or hanging out with friends.

Drivers must always give way to a train at a level crossing.

When at a level crossing
you must follow the rules
to keep safe.

Active Level Crossings

Controlled by red flashing lights
or boom gates

PASSIVE LEVEL CROSSINGS

Protected by a STOP sign

PASSIVE LEVEL CROSSINGS

Protected by a GIVE WAY sign

1 Come to a complete stop when lights are flashing and DO NOT proceed until lights stop flashing, the boom gates have lifted and tracks clear of trains.
2 If a train passes but the lights don’t stop and/or the boom doesn’t rise, don’t assume there’s a fault – there might be another train coming.
3 If lights or boom gates are not activated, there is no requirement to stop. However, still apply safe driving skills and look for trains in both directions to ensure tracks are clear.
1 Come to a complete stop before the holding line or well clear of the tracks, in a position where you can see both directions along the tracks;
2 Look for trains in both directions; and
3 Only proceed over the tracks if there are no trains approaching.
1 Slow down and prepare to stop – even if you don’t think a train will be coming at this time;
2 Look for trains in both directions along the tracks;
3 Only proceed over the tracks if there are no trains approaching.
