Greystanes primary school students win national rail safety comp

Two students, Tiffany Jie and Sophia Brown of year five Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School in Greystanes NSW have won first place in a national primary schools competition for the book they authored and illustrated about rail safety titled Let’s Teach Joe about Safety.

The students will receive a special visit from the Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure NSW, Mark Coure MP at 8.55am on Monday 27 November, who will attend their school assembly to personally congratulate them on their achievements and award them with their published book and prizes.

“TrackSAFE Education ran a national primary schools competition which challenged Australian students to write and illustrate a picture book about a safe rail journey. The competition helps to build a rail safety culture in the classroom that children can translate into real life practice when anywhere near the rail network,” said Bob Herbert, Chairman of the TrackSAFE Foundation.

“Congratulations to Tiffany Jie and Sophia Brown who have incorporated a number of rail safety messages into their story, including everything from pram safety on platforms to safety rules on board the train. This book will empower its readers to improve their safety and the safety of others when near the rail network.

Let’s Teach Joe about Safety has been lodged with the Australian National Library along with the Greystanes library and has also been made into an eBook, available for download from the TrackSAFE Education website. On behalf of TrackSAFE I would like to congratulate the students for this enormous achievement and for being among Australia’s youngest published authors,” said Mr Herbert.
