Grain season sees a lot of additional freight trains operating meaning a lot more activity at rural and regional level crossings.
Patron of the TrackSAFE Foundation, The Hon. Tim Fischer AC sends an important reminder to the community to take extra care around level crossings during harvest. This is especially important as some rail lines are only used during grain season so the community need to be alert and aware.
There are sadly around 150 collisions between pedestrians or vehicles with trains at level crossings resulting in death or serious injury every year. The damage caused by a single level crossing incident between a train and a heavy vehicle has been, and will continue to be, the single most costly incident in terms of potential loss of life and economic impact for the rail industry.
The TrackSAFE Foundation urges everyone to take care at level crossings and around tracks during grain season and in the lead up to Christmas; we want everyone to make it home safely to their families this festive season.
